The Powerful Owl is an elusive apex predator and Australia's largest owl. It depends on native forests with large tree hollows for breeding. Land clearing in Victoria is threatening its habitat. Researchers are using small GPS trackers attached to the owl's tail to monitor its nocturnal behaviour around Melbourne's outer north-eastern suburbs. This data may help preserve and protect tree hollows from future land development within the owl's habitat.
