This unique Australian egg-laying mammal has a duck-like beak and web feet. Its fur covered body is like an otter and has a tail like a beaver. They scoop up insects, larvae and food from the muddy bottoms of creeks and waterways.
Increasing litter, especially rubber bands and hair-ties are threatening their ability to swim and forage for food. The highest rate of platypus litter entanglements in Melbourne is along the Diamond Creek, Eltham.
